What is Foreign Body Removal in Lungs

When foreign objects, such as food particles, small objects, or other materials, accidentally enter the lungs, they can cause breathing difficulties, infections, or even life-threatening complications. Foreign body removal is a specialized procedure to safely extract these objects from the lungs or airways, restoring normal respiratory function and preventing further complications.

Why Is Foreign Body Removal Necessary?

Foreign objects in the airways can block airflow, irritate lung tissue, or introduce bacteria, leading to pneumonia or other infections. Symptoms of a foreign body in the lungs may include:

  • Persistent cough
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Fever or recurring lung infections

Prompt removal of the foreign object minimizes damage and reduces the risk of serious health issues.

How Is the Procedure Done?

Our expert team uses bronchoscopy, a minimally invasive technique, to locate and remove the foreign object from the lungs. During a bronchoscopy:

  1. Anesthesia is administered to ensure comfort.
  2. A flexible or rigid bronchoscope (a thin, tube-like instrument with a camera) is inserted through the mouth or nose to access the lungs.
  3. Guided by real-time imaging, our specialists carefully remove the foreign body using specialized tools attached to the bronchoscope.

Most patients experience a quick recovery and can return home the same day, depending on their individual health needs.

If you require this type of advanced procedure Dr Herath will discuss with you the risks and benefits on individual basis.
