Why choose us?
In the true spirit of comprehensive personalised medicine, Sydney Respiratory Clinic provides a compelling value proposition for patients. Here’s why.
We are dedicated to providing optimal specialist care
- Our respiratory and sleep physicians hold dual fellowships in sleep medicine and respiratory medicine with the Thoracic Society of Australia. They each have special interests in various subspecialties of Respiratory Medicine, enabling us as a team to provide comprehensive care for the full spectrum of respiratory and sleep disorders with the highest quality of care.
- Dr. Samantha Herath has dual post-fellowship training in sleep medicine, interventional bronchoscopy, and lung cancer, along with a PhD in this area. This allows her to perform all necessary procedures throughout the lung cancer patient journey, without the need to refer patients to multiple specialists for different procedures. Patients receive treatment from a skilled and experienced specialist who stays current with the latest treatments and is a pioneer in her field of research.
- Dr. Duszyk has a special interest in asthma and airway disease and is currently pursuing a PhD in asthma.
- Dr. Jian Tai has completed a 12-month post-fellowship at the esteemed Woolcock Institute of Sleep Medicine and is well-versed in the latest diagnostic and treatment strategies for all sleep disorders.
- Dr. KV Singh has a particular interest in lung cancer and EBUS, while also providing holistic care to patients as a generalist.
We have a convenient onsite sleep therapist and a CPAP clinic
- Our sleep therapist, Ms. Candice Tang, has over 8 years of experience running a CPAP clinic and conducting AutoSet trials. With a background in medical sciences and experience working at North Shore Private Hospital and the SAN Hospital as an accredited sleep scientist, she is highly skilled at helping even the most challenging CPAP patients achieve success and compliance. Having a sleep therapist onsite allows for urgent and accurate AutoSet trials, and Candice provides support throughout the trial period. She also assists in selecting and purchasing CPAP machines if needed, offering ongoing care.
- If medical issues arise during your treatment for sleep apnoea, our sleep physician can promptly address them and refer you to our sleep physician.
Our mission is to provide care exceeding expectations.
- The minimum duration for our consultations is 30 minutes. We never double-book patients, allowing us to give you our full attention and discuss your treatment plan in detail. You will never be rushed during your visit.
- We strive to adhere to your scheduled appointment times. If there is a delay of more than 15 minutes, you will be promptly notified. We understand that your time is valuable.
- Dr. Herath performs highly complex bronchoscopy procedures, which only a few respiratory specialists are qualified to undertake. There are no out-of-pocket charges or gaps for patients undergoing these procedures. Dr. Herath can perform bronchoscopy procedures for both public and private patients, as she has admitting rights to multiple hospitals, including Sydney Adventist Hospital, Northern Beaches Hospital, and Macquarie University Hospital.
- General respiratory consultations are charged at a reasonable out-of-pocket cost to ensure timely and well-considered care plans and follow-ups. Your out-of-pocket costs are similar whether you have a lengthy (60-minute) or shorter (30-minute) appointment. If you bring your EFTPOS card, we can return your Medicare rebate to your bank account immediately before you leave the clinic.
- We communicate with your GP after each consultation through a formal clinic letter. Depending on the clinical situation and urgency, we will also contact any other specialists involved in your care.
- If you are referred for lung cancer or lung nodule treatment, we leave nothing to chance. Time is of the essence—before you even come to the clinic, we will organize all necessary investigations, including lung function tests, bronchoscopy, biopsy, and PET scans, to ensure your diagnosis is completed within two weeks. We will personally contact cardiothoracic surgeons and oncologists when referrals are needed and will arrange urgent appointments on your behalf.
- We are committed to providing the best care possible and have hired skilled lung function scientists, top CPAP therapists, and high-quality administrative staff to ensure that your care exceeds expectations.
We provide a rapid access lung nodule/cancer clinic
- We will see you within 48 hours from reaching an urgent referral from your GP and within 1-2 weeks for a non-urgent appointment.
- If the referral is for a lung cancer/nodule we will organise the multiple other investigations you require including bronchoscopy if needed.
- This will be organised prior to seeing you so that you can go home with a plan and greater peace of mind.
We take time to discuss your condition with you
- Our treatment is very personalised to the patient’s circumstances and requirements, as opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach.
- Treatment works best when the patient understands the treatment, the reason for it and when the specialist has taken the time to explain the process and investigations as well as treatment.
- Our first patient appointments are 30 to 60 minutes and follow up from 20 to 45 minutes.
- If you feel you have more than one medical condition to discuss please inform the reception at booking.
We provide connected care
- We routinely discuss treatments with your GP and inform all your specialists of your condition.
- For patients with multiple specialists, involved we try to keep everyone informed and up-to-date with your treatment and if we introduce a new treatment we will discuss with your treating team.
- We will send a detailed clinical letter to your GP and copy to all your specialists after each consultation (we will obtain your consent for this at your first visit)
- Your GP is central to managing all your healthcare needs. Therefore, even if you are referred to us by a specialist, we highly recommend bringing a referral from your GP that includes your treatment history. This information is often not provided by your specialist.
You have online access to your health records via our patient portal
- We provide online access to your blood results, X-rays, clinic letters, and any other investigations performed through our clinic. Once the specialist reviews and accepts your results, they are promptly shared with you via the patient portal.
- Through this patient portal, you can upload all your previous results and documents, ensuring that the specialist has all your information before your appointment.
- To log in to the patient portal, please visit “Patient Portal Login Clinic to Cloud” and use the email address you provided us to create a password. At the time of registration with our clinic, we will also send you a text or email with the link for access.
We have all facilities under one roof
- We offer all facilities under one roof for your convenience. This includes specialist respiratory and sleep consultations, chest physiotherapy, sleep therapist and CPAP consultations, a full lung function lab with allergy testing, and a sleep lab.
- We can provide a range of bronchoscopy procedures, from simple bronchial washes for infections to advanced interventional bronchoscopy, including Y-stent placement for tracheal tumors. Our specialist expertise ensures that you do not need to see another specialist to complete your bronchoscopy procedures. This approach saves you time and money while ensuring continuity of care, as the same specialist who knows and understands you will assist you throughout your clinical journey.
